Un anno fa, un venerdì pomeriggio, uscendo dall’Istituto con il professore, incontrammo un bel ragazzo di circa 26 anni, Alan, che soffriva di una grave paresi spastica.
Dopo averlo abbracciato calorosamente, Feuerstein gli chiese dove avrebbe passato il week-end.
“Dai miei genitori, come al solito”, rispose il ragazzo.
“Beh, divertiti, e cerca di uscire con qualche ragazza. Sarebbe ora che pensassi a sistemarti e a formare una famiglia”.
Alan restò stupefatto.
“Una famiglia io? E perché mai?”.
“Non hai voglia di avere una casa tua, una persona che ami e che ti ama, e dei bambini?”
“Dei bambini?! E perché mai?”
“Alan, pochi come te sanno quanto sia difficile impegnarsi per raggiungere un risultato, per questo tu potresti essere un ottimo padre, pieno di attenzioni e comprensione verso i tuoi figli. Non hai idea di quanto possa essere bello dedicarsi a un bambino, dargli da mangiare, pulirgli il naso. I bambini sono il nostro futuro”.
“E che cosa mi interessa del futuro? Tanto poi uno muore e va in paradiso…”
“Ti sbagli”, disse Feuerstein . “Occuparsi di un bambino: è questo il nostro paradiso, qui, sulla terra”

Ho incontrato Reuven Feuerstein quando mio figlio Davide con la sindrome di Down aveva 3 anni. Ho immediatamente capito che avevo trovato una perla preziosa nella mia vita perchè le sue parole, le sue intuizioni e le sue osservazioni erano veramente straordinarie e utili per me. Non avevo mai udito prima una tale stima per mio figlio, per le sue abilità ed ebbi la conferma che mio figlio poteva avere successo e vincere la sua sindrome di Down. La gioia e la speranza che ho avuto nel mio primo incontro con lui ha riempito il mio cuore e mi ha dato una straordinaria energia per continuare sulla mia strada e per sperare in mio figlio. L’ho raggiunto a Gerusalemme con tutta la mia famiglia, chiedendogli di darmi un programma che poteva aiutare il mio bambino a frequentare una scuola normale con un programma normale, senza differenze dal punto di vista qualitativo e quantitativo e, attraverso i suoi suggerimenti, siamo riusciti a fare questo durante questi anni, con impegno e sacrificio. I suoi programmi a scuola non si sono mai differenziati da quelli dei suoi compagni! Ora studia grafica in una scuola superiore.
Davide ha raggiunto numerosi successi in questi anni: programmi regolari a scuola, nuoto, amici, giocatore di rugby, surf, educatore di bambini nella sua parrocchia. Se qualcuno mi chiedesse cosa Reuven Feuerstein mi ha dato, risponderei che davvero ha lenito il mio dolore per la nascita di questo figlio e mi ha insegnato a vedere i problemi di Davide come risolvibili e “modificabili”, nelle sue parole. La mia vita è cambiata dopo averlo incontrato, mi ha dato speranza e gioia, la possibilità di vedere mio figlio come una persona che può superare le sue difficoltà con i nostri sforzi e il nostro aiuto. E’ su di noi la responsabilità di cambiare la sua vita, noi possiamo aiutarlo a superare i suoi cromosomi. Ecco perché ho dedicato la mia vita a diffondere il suo metodo, diventandone formatore e aprendo una Cooperativa Sociale, Centro per lo Sviluppo delle Abilità Cognitive, un Centro Autorizzato per la formazione al metodo Feuerstein. Abbiamo molte famiglie che giungono a noi e ciò che ho sempre detto loro è che Reuven Feuerstein merita il Premio Nobel perché è un essere superiore che ha un’intelligenza superiore che non ho mai conosciuto nella mia vita, un’intelligenza capace di dare SPERANZA CONCRETA con un METODO CONCRETO per i genitori. Questo è ciò che distingue Reuven Feuerstein da altri scienziati dell’ intelligenza: la concretezza del suo metodo, così concreto e vero che può essere LA RISPOSTA alle angosce dei genitori. Ecco perché può essere considerato un UOMO DI PACE perché si è distinto portando pace in tutte le famiglie nelle quali la speranza per i loro figli poteva essere persa per un grande dolore.

NICOLETTA LASTELLA'S WITNESS FOR REUVEN FEUERSTEIN FOR HIS PRESENTATION TO NOBEL PRIZE 2011

I met Reuven Feuerstein when my child Davide with Down syndrome was 3 years old. I immediately understood that I had found a precious pearl in my life because his words, intuitions and remarks were really extraordinary and helpful for me. I had never heard before such an esteem for my child about his abilities and I was confirmed that my child could succeed and win his Down syndrome. The joy and the hope I got from this first meeting with him fulfilled my heart and gave me an amazing energy to continue on my path and to hope in my child. I reached him in Jerusalem with all my family, asking him to give me a program which could help my child to attend a regular school with a regular program, without differences from the qualitative and quantitative point of view and, through his suggestions, we have succeeded through all these years, with commitment and sacrifices. His programs in school have never been different from his mates! Now he is studying graphics in a secondary professional school.
Davide gained numerous successes in these years : regular programs at school, swimming, friends, rugby player, surfer, educator of little children in his parish. If someone asked me to tell what Reuven Feuerstein gave me, I would reply that he really relieved my sorrow about the birth of this child, and taught me to see Davide’s problem solvable, “modifiable”, in his words. My life has changed after having meeting him, he gave me hope and joy, the possibility to see my child as a person who can overcome his difficulties with our efforts and our help. It’s on us the responsibility to change his life, we can help him to overcome his chromosomes. This is why I devoted my life to spread his method, becoming a trainer of it and opening a Cooperative Society, Centro per lo Sviluppo delle Abilità Cognitive (www.sviluppocognitivo.it), an Authorized Centre for training to Feuerstein method. We have many families coming at us and what I have always told them is that Reuven Feuerstein deserves the Nobel Prize because he is a superior being that has got a superior intelligence which I have never known in my life, an intelligence able to give CONCRETE HOPE with a CONCRETE METHOD for parents. This is what distinguish Reuven Feuerstein from other scientists of intelligence: the concreteness of his method, so concrete and true that can be THE RESPONSE to parent’s anguishes. This is why he can be considered a MAN OF PEACE because he has distinguished himself bringing peace in all the families in which the hope for their children could have been lost for a great sorrow.
